HIGHLIGHTS FROM A WALKING GUIDE TO DISCOVER BRUSSELS
Brussels and other cities in the low countries were important outposts on medieval trade routes for iron, metal arts, fabrics, lace and tapestries. After England was swept by the industrial resolution, Belgium soon followed, the beneficiary of geographic, political and socio-economic circumstances. By 1900, Belgium was one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
That wealth was displayed in Brussels where residences in the Art Nouveau style lined block after block. A king molded Brussels into a grand European capital with wide boulevards and museums to house works from Europe and his Congo colony.
Traces of the Middle Ages and late 19th century wealth, along with transformations from African migrations and expansion of the European Union are all waiting to be seen in Brussels.
